Why does it take so long for my PRO to pay me?

You may be asking yourself why there's a huge time difference between Domestic, and International P.R.O. Royalties. (In a more brute way... you're saying to yourself "holy sh*t why does this take forever?!?!".

I understand you, fam.

So, let me explain.

Each P.R.O. collects money derived in their respective country.

BMI collects money derived in the USA.
APRA collects money derived in Australia.
SOCAN collects money derived from Canada.
(theres hundreds more of these)

After they collect, they then organize all of it, and then send those royalties to the country of the writer (i.e. you!) If the writers is in that same country, cool! That makes it much easier.

However...

if for instance you live in Australia and are with APRA, but the royalties were collected in the USA by BMI, then they will have to collect it during that time period process it - then send it to APRA (when they get to it), where you will then receive it.

The same is true, if the royalties are collected by APRA from usage in Australia, and are sent to the writer in USA under BMI. It will typically take over a year for both the collection and transfer to occur.

Because of this, many writers outside the US choose to register with a US P.R.O. since usually more money is derived in the USA than their home country. Not that the USA is better or worse, it simply just plays a larger market share in commercial music.

If you live outside the USA, are signed up to That Pitch Pro, and would like any insight as to how to approach this, make a post in the community Many producers/artists in your situation will gladly help a hand in guiding you to what is working best for them. It's a great crew and everyone is down to help.

As a further note, That Pitch has no ability to speed up either process. Exclusive Music Libraries who get their music through That Pitch all independently work within their own timelines for registrations. Payments are sent to you as soon as That Pitch has received the funds from the Music Library. That Pitch consistently works hard to increase the timeline for both upfront & backend payments.

To track commercial usage of the tracks you placed, we suggest checking out tunesat.com. Many members have found a lot of value in using their free account, and tracking their international and domestic film usage for tracks they've placed with music licensing companies. It gives you a much better understanding of what royalties you can expect in the future.
